Why couldn’t it have snowed like this when I lived in Baltimore. I guess I left a year too early!

This week I applied to be a member of the Los Angeles Art Association/Gallery 825.

I only told about 5 people in case I didn’t get in. Well, today I GOT IN! Gallery 825 is on La Cienega Blvd in West Hollywood. “LAAA’s mission is to provide opportunities, resources, services and exhibition venues for Los Angeles artists, with an emphasis on emerging talent. Founded in 1925, LAAA has launched the art careers of many celebrated artists and has played a central role in the formation of Los Angeles’ arts community.”

The benefits of being a member:

  • Ongoing group and solo show exhibitions featuring emerging artists
  • Mentoring opportunities pairing young artists with established artists
  • Ongoing career preparedness and workplace readiness workshops for artists
  • Panel discussions with celebrated artists and art historians
  • Film & Video 825: ongoing screenings of local and nationally recognized video artists’ work
  • LAAA Artist Sponsorships for economically disadvantaged artists
  • Peer Review Groups — Ongoing artist driven peer critique groups
  • Public Art Classes — Ongoing studio art classes for beginners and maturing artists
  • Ongoing international cultural exchange opportunities for LAAA artists
  • Conversations with the Artists — Informal talks with exhibiting artists
  • Artist Hash Sessions — an informal artist driven dialogue
  • A Drawing Workshop
  • Art consultation services
  • Arts education for the emerging collector

It’s an amazing opportunity and a great starting point for my career in LA. I am so freakin excited. I had given myself a goal of one year to get into a gallery, it only took me 6 months. Go glitter paintings!

When I was standing in line at the Elizabeth Gilbert event this weekend a few women in line were talking about her. They said that they heard her speak and said that she was really vulgar and dropped the F bomb all of the time and acted kind of crazy and was very disheveled and looked like she hadn’t even showered. They also agreed that Cleaving wasn’t good.

Cleaving by Julia Powell. I feel like I have to read it, but it’s definitely making me like Julia Powell even less.

This is the second negative review I’ve hard about this book.  Maybe Julie Powell should have stopped while she was (slightly) ahead…
