I am submitting this painting to the Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s Artist Member’s Exhibition. We had to write an artist statement and I hate artist statements but I wrote a pretty good one so here it is:
I have been drawn to cemeteries for as long as I can remember. What I recently discovered is a connection between that interest and the fact that I was adopted. I have always been intrigued with genealogy and people’s story, their history. I was able to find that on the tombstones and in the stillness of the cemetery I was able to imagine people’s lives as well as the part of my identity that was unknown. In the past my work has been intensely focused on birth and origin, which has led me to start to explore the other spectrum of death and destination. I am interested in the connection between people, the people that we are connected to through birth and the connection we all have through death.
